Photography by Karen Hsiao, inspired by the creations of Louis Fleischauer. The Transmogrification series is a joint project between Karen Hsiao and Louis Fleischauer. Fleischauer is the draftsman and creator of the wardrobe worn in the pictures. The philosophies behind his designs are diverse from Hsiao’s message. Fleischauer uses his designs as a means for transformation, a symbol in reaching the pristine self, where as Hsiao’s approach deals with narcissism and failed attempts to realize an ideal. Transmogrification: "To change into a different shape or form, especially one that is fantastic or bizarre" Transmogrification has two parts: the “Immortal” mythological beings, and the “Human” emulators of those beings. The Humans are seduced by the beauty, power, and status of the Immortals. Consumed by the need to become Immortals, Humans attempt to mimic them by grafting themselves with the skin and bones of animals. Their misguided efforts having resulted in failure, they linger on as grotesque versions of their former selves.
